Big or Small, Good Leadership is Universal

Last week, Deloitte hosted a seminar called Private Perspectives for privately held companies. The guest speaker was the CEO of GE, Jeffrey Immelt. It was held in NYC with a live audience and simulcast across the globe…I was fortunate to be live in NYC. He shared his four leadership practices that any manager or CEO can utilize. I thought I’d pass these along:

  • Push the team to have very high standards. I think that is phenomenal. He talked in-depth about demonstrating principles and values.
  • Play to win. Be the best you can be in your space.
  • Drive strategic change in an organization. The role of leadership is to identify opportunities for growth and possess a continuous improvement mentality at all times.
  • Continue to develop the leadership team. Embrace a culture that is committed to developing leadership and your best people. GE is really focused on that.

Before the event I was wondering how he was going to connect with the audience since he runs a large, publicly traded company, but I walked away very impressed and inspired. Here is a guy who is famous, someone who probably can’t relate to my business. All of a sudden I realized that we share many of the same thoughts, which was both exciting and a little scary. It doesn’t matter how big or small your company is – we can all benefit from good leadership.
